From soldier
to designer

The pen is mightier than the sword.

After serving 12 years in the British Army, I stepped away from one way of working and into another. The environment changed, but the mindset didn’t. You learn quickly that detail and doing things properly matters, and that if something isn’t clear, it doesn’t work. That way of thinking stuck with me, and it’s now a big part of how I approach design.

These days, the focus isn’t on operations or orders. It’s on communication. Every business has something behind it. A reason to exist, a way it works, something that sets it apart. The challenge is making that clear to the people it’s meant for.

That’s the part I enjoy

Taking something that isn’t quite landing yet, getting to the root of it, and working out how to express it in a way that feels simple, but says something more. Not just making things look good, but making them make sense.

There’s a level of care that goes into that. A bit of problem-solving, a bit of strategy, and a lot of attention to detail and creativity. Finding the idea, refining it, and making sure it holds up properly. Because the strongest work isn’t the loudest or most complicated. It’s the work that says the right thing, in the right way, and sticks.

Keeping it simple

Working together should feel easy.

You shouldn’t be left wondering what’s going on, chasing updates, or trying to piece things together yourself. That’s where most frustrations come from, and it’s completely avoidable.

I keep things clear from the start

You’ll know what we’re doing, what’s coming next, and why decisions are being made. No complication or vague explanations. Just a straightforward process and open communication the whole way through.

I don’t just take a brief and disappear. There’ll be questions, conversations, and the occasional pushback if something doesn’t feel right. Not for the sake of it, but to make sure we’re focusing on what actually matters and getting to the best outcome.

At the same time, keeping things moving

Deadlines are respected, expectations are clear, and there’s a steady flow to the project without it feeling dragged or rushed. It’s collaborative, but it’s not chaotic. We figure things out together, keep things on track, and build something you feel confident putting your name to.
